With modern building codes, insulation requirements have evolved, and new buildings today need to use what is known as continuous insulation. Continuous insulation is often a rigid foam insulation board that can be installed outbound of your sheathing, to create a continuous insulation layer, minimizing thermal breaks. Continuous insulation, also known as CI, is defined by ASHRAE 90.1 as “insulation that is continuous across all structural members without thermal bridges other than fasteners and service openings.
